All it looks like is that the entire line is made up of different kinds of armor. I didn't plan on buying any of these, but still, that's lame. Where's the Mandarin?! Even the Marvel Legends Iron Man figures kind of lamed out. Five different suits of armor and only two villains counting the Iron Monger BAF, which does look cool, but they could have given us a new comic book Mandarin, Whiplash, or even the freaking Spymaster instead of more armor variants.
They might be under embargo until the movie comes out.
As an example of how sensitive the studios are about this kind of thing, we recently posted the Funko Pop! Vinyl figures for the Iron Man movie, and soon after got an email asking to take down one of the images and character names because it had been released too soon on accident. It wasn't even a character, it was a different version of the armor.

I'm hoping so. The IM2 line covered an impressive amount of ground, but there's still plenty I'd like to see; like Stark in a suit, Pepper, and classic and Gremlin-piloted versions of Titanium Man.

What's odd to me is that they've removed articulation from the MU-sized, non modular line. I guess this is the way they were going with Avengers anyway, when they released that single-packed Chitauri with special feature: removed articulation. So even if they make a Mandarin at that size, do you want it?

For me it comes down to the specific character and just what articulation has been removed. The movie Hawkeye needed more articulation, but not every character needs to be able to pose like Spider-Man.
Eh to be honest, all those Iron Men will sell. Iron Man always sells. It's better to have a bunch of peg warming Iron Mans, than to have Peg Warming Mandarins.
I'm sure there will be a Movie Mandarin down the line somewhere, but for the initial wave of figures, and thousands of kids wanting Iron Man, it's always better to ship full cases of the primary hero.
When you don't, you end up like Spider-Man 1, where all you could find was J.J and Norman Osborn, or Transformers without Bumblebee, or Cars without Lightning McQueen.
It's horrible for collectors but Movie years have to target the masses and kids. It's these sales that fund the later waves with the more obscure characters we want.
Not sure what stores you're shopping at, but very few movie toy lines have been successful enough in the past 10 years to sell the piles of main characters the toy companies put out. Only Revenge of the Sith and Avengers performed at that level that I can recall.
TRU is still choking on Iron Mans from part 2 and movie Thors. Every store's choking on McQueens, which have virtually killed the Cars 2 line after its first wave. The all-Spider-Man, all-the-time line last year has been an absolute disaster. We've seen Superman and Batman movie lines fail similarly in the past with bins full of nothing but the main heroes on clearance. Meanwhile, try to find most of the villains or supporting character from these lines. If they're made at all, they'sell out quick.
I think the IM2 toyline catches a lot of heck just because you can find plenty (oh heck lets be honest, more than plenty) of them sitting there at TRU clogging pegs. But if you look at the figures it all IM mark 4, IM Mark 6 or light up Iron Man. I can't recall the last time I saw any of the Comic wave figures or a Mark 5 armor. So basically it's that first wave that TRU and everyone else ordered so heavily that they can't get rid of them. I don't think it's an indication that IM@ didn't sell, just that the company order too much.
