I recognize that I am 55yo and all that entails.

I was NEVER a huge BeeGees fan, even when I was in high school in the 70s, but remember when they got a weekly gig hosting the (live) Midnight Special.

The passing of Robin last Sunday (and the passing of his fraternal twin, Maurice a few years ago, from the same cancer, BTW) made me very sad.

Robin had the voice (not unlike Jon Anderson of YES), and could write the hits, but lacked the looks (and teeth) of older brother (last man standing), Barry.

It's very sad and even sadder when you realize that Barry has outlived all three of his younger siblings.

Having grown up in the 70s and appreciating a broad variety of music, I was a pretty big Bee Gees fan back in the day, including much of their earlier (pre-Saturday Night Fever) material. Robin may not have been the most handsome of the Brothers Gibb, but he certainly was a huge talent, both as part of the group and independently. His passing is undeniable part of the fading of an era... Hard to believe the 70s were that long ago already.

Ditto, Mom...

(In retrospect, I probably should have included "Gibb" in the thread title...)

Back around 1970-1 I thought the BeeGees might be "the next Beatles." (Lonely Days & Lonely Nights era) I was a profound idiot, of course. A few years later I thought that Queen might be "the next Beatles." (Clueless? Moi? I never suspected Freddie might be gay until his hot pants & suspender days!)

I remember watching the Midnight Special religiously every Saturday (Helen Reddy & Wolfman Jacks also functioned as emcees) WITH MY MOM, and laughing at Barry's frosted fiberglas hairdo! Robin sported a hairdo like a girl back then, and Maurice...well...he never seemed very prominent onscreen...) They were an underrated talent.

I hated, loathed & despised the entire DISCO influence...and most everything the BGs did post the Midnight Special. But credit where credit is due...

Robin Gibb was a tragic figure, IMO. His voice was what made the band special...like Graham Nash & the Hollies, but Robin started to believe his own press clippings. Not too long after the BGs had made the grade, Robin decided that HIS talent (and voice) was the reason the band was making it. He went solo. I have all three of his subsequent oddball records. In a word...

unlistenable...like trying to eat a bowl of curry powder...

...a reuniting of the 3 brothers ensued not long after!

Gads...the Midnight Special... Now that brings back some memories. What a thrill it was if the 'rents would let us stay up late and watch back in the day. Big smile I do so miss Wolfman Jack as well.

I will have to concur, Rann, that Robin was the more eccentric of the Brothers Gibb (by quite a bit), and I always thought so, even when I was young. The older I got and the more I read about him, it only confirmed things. But anyhow, many truly creative/artistic folks are anyway, so there you go...

My daughter and I were talking about his passing, and we both kept saying how much we will miss Jimmy Fallon and Justin Timberlake doing their "Barry Gibb Talk Show" skits, with Jimmy as Barry and Justin as Robin. That's assuming, of course, they won't "go there" anymore, now that Robin has passed. Ahhh, but the laughs along the way!!
