In about a month, we should set up a "2012 Toys of the Year" nomination thread...

And then vote on 'em in December. Might be a decent way to attract more traffic to the site if we promote it well (and it might not be, but at the very least I think it'd be amusing for the existing user base).

Any ideas on what the categories should be? 'Cause I have no idea; I just thought this up literally like two minutes ago. ;b

I getting chilled just by thinking the number of action figures that could be nominated just for the 1st position. Anyway, thats a good idea, lets find someone here to start this.

I've thought it over a little today, and I think that is a good starting base for categories (I pretty much stole this list from Michael Crawford's toy review site and reworked it slightly):

Best of 2012:
New 12"-18" figure
New 5"-11" figure
New figure under 5"
New vehicle
New playset
Reissue
New statue
New bust
New toy line
Overall toy company

Does that sound OK to everybody? You guys with lists already made, is there anything that another category needs to be made for?

I figure once we get that hammered out, in about a month or so, we can open a thread where we can all nominate a few figures for each category, and then around the first week of December, once all of the nominations are finished, we can make another thread where we vote. =)

I'd like to see some distinction between high end collectors toys (Sideshow, expensive imports) and toys you can just buy off the shelf for a normal price. Too often the 'best of's are way more expensive than I feel comfortable spending on a toy. Yes, I'm cheap.

1. Riobot Gurren Lagann
2. Bandai 6" Thundercats Classics Lion-O
3. Marvel Minimates Kang
4. Walmart Exclusive 6" Avengers Hulk
5. TMNT Classics Raphael
6. S.H. Monsterarts Mecha Godzilla
7. Marvel Minimates M.O.D.O.K.
8. Thundercats Minimates Pantro
9. Figma Samus Aran
10. FoC Shockwave

I have yet to obtain the TRU Exclusive MP Optimus Prime, MP Soundwave, Mattel's Black Lion Voltron, Figma Link, or S.H. Monsterarts King Ghidorah so my list will probably change before the end of the year.

Throw in a best import to the list. Should probably do best ongoing line as well since not all of the best lines of the year actually started this year.

What about just "best toyline" (in addition to "best new toyline") to recognize the long-runners that are still going strong?

Would it be worthwhile to include a best "BAF" or a best "By Sub Only" category?

MP-10 is easily in my Top 10. I messed around w/Optimus for 45 minutes yesterday BEFORE I even transformed him into a truck.

OK, so we’ve got fifteen categories so far then:

Best of 2012:
New figure under 5"

New 12"-18" figure
New build-a-figure (any size)
New “high-end” (over $100) figure (any size)
New vehicle
New playset
Reissue
New import
New statue
New bust
New toy line
Ongoing (before 2012) toy line
Sub service
Overall toy company

Great idea.

This board has often done its own Best Of, and we need to do it this year too.
When I first got on this board in, geez I dunno, 1999?, I thought it was just for Super Powers-obsessed types, but over the years it really has grown to have its own vision and perspective, and I'm curious where it's tastes will land this year.

And Jon has the coolest avatar ever.

So everybody's cool with these fifteen categories, then? =)

We always post our "Best of".

However, I like the specific categories. Isn't it amazing that we actually have this much to choose from?

This childhood mego collector could never have dreamed of such a thing:)
